Absolutely Speechless — VBAC Ban Explanation Letter
The amazing and brilliant Jen on VBACfacts.com posts this winner:
A Letter From A Hospital Explaining Why They Banned VBAC
And I thought I was speechless about the UHC elective cesarean thing I posted about last. This just kicks it. I may calm down enough to respond to this in a measured and analytical way sometime before I have this baby, but I doubt it.
Friends, it was never more clearly stated why birth does not belong anywhere near a hospital. And from the horses’ mouth.
I’m somewhat in disbelief.
“The acceptance of women’s autonomy and right to choose their mode of delivery has led to a significant number of women simply choosing Cesarean as the preferred mode of delivery.”
I can’t believe that.
I’m proud to say that I gave birth to my third child after two prior c-sections. It was the only right decision.

That letter is the largest pile of crap I’ve seen in ages. What the hell?
My doctors and the hospital gave me an awful guilt trip when I had my VBAC a year ago. This letter is right on point with the propaganda they threw at me then. My experience with a VBAC was horrible simply because I knew that the doctors had no faith in my decision and were antagonistic toward me.
I want to thank you–your posts about birthing issues have been so positive and empowering for me. It has been 2.5 yrs since my c-section and I was finally able to write about it two mornings ago in my “morning pages.” I believe your words here gave me the courage to blame the doctors and the system; and stop blaming me. Thank you. Thank you. You are awesome!
Hey Jackie…
Thanks for your comment! I’m so sorry you were treated poorly; I have no idea where these providers-of-service get off acting as if they have some moral control over our birth choices.
Getting your head on straight after a cesarean can be really tough. I recommend the ICAN yahoogroup strongly: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ICAN-online/
When you’ve spent your whole recovery asking yourself if you’re insane, since so many people are “just fine” with theirs, it’s nice sometimes to hear that there are others who feel like you do.
Good luck on your journey!
Today on the related topic of premature babies:
http://www.mercurynews.com/localnewsheadlines/ci_8700548
“”There is an epidemic of prematurity in this country, where our rates of preterm labor and low birth weight are continuing to increase,” he said. “We are going in the wrong direction.” [...]
There also is a rising incidence of induced premature deliveries and caesarean sections - many because of distress to the mother or infant, but some for the convenience of doctor or mother.” Duh.
And when is finally someone “officially” making the connection and reversing the trend at the c/s root??
