Sails for Sustainability

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

It’s no surprise that the world is changing, and a lot of people are doing a lot of thinking about sustainability moving into a world where climate and economy are no longer certain things. So it was with no small amount of glee that I found out about the Salish Sea Trading Cooperative. Check this [...]

More Science on Freak Waves

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

This is so cool: http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/40463 Freak waves towering as much as 30 m above the surrounding seas have long been reported by mariners, and recent satellite studies have shown that they are more common that previously expected. Now, a team of physicists in Germany and the US has gained important insights into the possible origins of [...]

Blue Water Crew!

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

News flash! Jason’s just gotten an opportunity to do some blue water sailing! He’ll be helping our friends on the s/v Don Quixote get their boat from Neah Bay south to San Francisco. It’s a bonus situation; Jason gets the experience of crewing down that part of the Pacific coast, and the crew of Don [...]

Mooring Practice

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

Sunday, we decided we needed some mooring practice. As in, we hadn’t, and hey, you moor under power, not under sail, thus making the perfect activity for folks whose mainsail is still at the shop. And since Angel Island is the closest local mooring spot, that made it the default target. Miss Aurora, just starting [...]

Sailing With Tom

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

Last Wednesday, we got the opportunity to take the family out on a sweet little sundown sail on our friend Tom’s boat, s/v Tempest. Tom is a liveaboard right down the dock from us, and we’d taken him out on our boat a few times. He’s a great sailor and a fun guy to have [...]

TShirts for Zac!

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

I don’t normally flog merchandise, but Zac Sunderland‘s family has t-shirts for sale on his site, to help raise money for his effort. So… make with the clicky and buy a few! Surely you know a bunch of cruisers who could use a new wardrobe item? What better than this? http://www.qbaroo.com/zacsunderland/main.cfm?categoryoid=1

Way to go, Zac!

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

OK, this is hands-down ubercool. I mean, uber, ubercool. Zac Sunderland is organizing a circumnavigation, on his boat, the Intrepid, an Islander 36. (Surely that fact will at least goad Zen into commenting. =) . Check out his website and the NPR interview with him. The interview is pretty lame, frankly, since the interviewer is [...]

Diesel goes up, up, up

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

Just when you thought it was safe to not research alternative propulsion for your boat, along comes this: http://marketplace.publicradio.org//display/web/2008/05/16/diesel/ Neato, huh? Up almost 60 percent in the past 12 months, the article says. Now if that isn’t motivation to start looking at electrical, or at least severely reducing your motorsailing, I don’t know what is.

A Fine Day Out

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

Despite the fantastic weather, through a twist of fate or bad luck, none of the people we’d invited sailing yesterday could make it, so we ended up going out with just the folks who live here. That never happens. Unless we’re only going to the pumpout, that is. Because the forecast was for wind and [...]

So You Want To Be A Liveaboard?

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

A few weeks back, I got an email forwarded from the Berkeley Parents’ Network, from a woman whose family was considering a move like ours, looking for some practical, BTDT advice about making the big leap. We chatted back and forth, and set up a day to have them come sailing. Unlike our previous adventure [...]

Never Do Anything Differently

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

One of the basic tenets of hosting non-sailors on your boat, especially when you’re liveaboards or cruisers, is “Never do anything differently than you normally do.” Well, this weekend, we absolutely exceeded ourselves in sticking to it. My friends and colleagues Alec and Adriana, and their friend Geoff, came to visit us on the s/v [...]

Tacks Like A What?

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

Yesterday was the first day we had the opportunity to keep a promise to ourselves. Since we are clearly novices to sailing in general and to the Excellent Adventure in specific, we promised ourselves that whenever Jason, Marc, and I were all on the boat together working, we’d knock off at sunset and go for [...]

July 4, 2007. We’ve been working like dogs on our little boat, frantically trying to get her in good enough shape to move aboard. Jason and Marc have been pulling insane hours doing boat foo while I pull insane hours trying to make the money to bankroll boat foo. Stress levels are pretty high, but [...]

Oh, Captain

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

I‘m working on a post about our first big trip out, Fourth of July on San Francisco Bay, Rowan’s early birthday, and all the coolness that happened yesterday, but in the meantime, I thought this one deserved a post all its own. Oh Captain, my Captain.

San Diego Calling…

Published by Laureen under Uncategorized

This morning, Jason received a phone call from Chevron, Inc. This seemed, well, odd. Until he answered, and discovered that Cap’n Ken and Minor had stopped in to this fuel station, “the first thing you see out of Mexico,” to refuel, and Cap’n Ken was in such a hurry, he had the fuel dock guys [...]
