Adapting to the Boat

A few readers have asked me how the boys are adapting to the boat. I finally caught up enough with some other projects to get some good photos going, and so here’s the update.

bathtimeThis is what bath time looks like in the boat. Yes, those are rubbermaid totes. They happen to fit perfectly in the head, and with a 12-gallon water heater, there’s exactly enough water to fill both tubs to the right depth at the right temperature. Bath time is good for hours and hours of entertainment, and ohmygosh, clean boys at the end! Amazing, the marvels of modern science!

Kestrel in JammiesIf we haven’t mentioned it before, it’s cold in the boat right now. We’re talking seriously chilly. The heating system (which ostensibly can be hooked into the air conditioning system the boat came with) has taken a back seat to all the necessary repairs and tweaks, so we’re operating on a single space heater. So bundling up is now officially a priority. Grammy and Grandpa Hudson, on their last visit out, brought the boys fuzzy fleece footie jammies. And let me tell you, friends, there is nothing cuter, in my totally not humble opinion, than little boys in fuzzy jammies. Rowan in Jammies

So to be honest, this looks nothing like a boat blog, does it? This could be any post on any mommy blog talking about bath time and jammies with two little boys. Which should go some ways to explaining to some people that life on a boat is sometimes not all that far removed from life anyplace else.

Ha! Do not talk to me about cold on the boat. We hit 38 in the salon the morning before left. That’s 3 with a little 8 after it and the condensation on the bimini was finally not dripping… it was frozen. I want to move SOUTH.

Zach saw those pictures and said “Hey that’s me!”
I said, no honey those are other little boys who live on a catamaran.
He said “Oh cool just like me, they are my friends!”

Oh yeah, and cold nothing! We had a few 12 degree nights and 20-something says so far and it’s only January. Now I remember why I liked traveling so much for work before Z was born. Brrrrrrr! 2 more winters and that’s all history!
